The European Parliament recommends granting Ukraine the status of an EU candidate

The European Union should grant Ukraine the status of a candidate for membership in the association.

This is stated in the resolution of the European Parliament on the foreign policy and security and defense policy of the EU "after the aggressive war of Russia against Ukraine", adopted in Strasbourg on June 8, reports DW .

438 parliamentarians voted in favor of the resolution, 65 voted against, 94 more abstained.

The European Parliament recommended that the Council of the EU agree that "the Versailles Declaration recognizes Ukraine's European aspirations and its application for EU membership, and grants it EU candidate status as a clear political signal of solidarity with the people of Ukraine." We are talking about the declaration of the informal EU summit in Versailles. She, however, was very careful in her wording, recognized only the European aspirations of Ukraine and added that the country is part of the European family of peoples, the newspaper writes.

However, earlier the European Parliament only called on the EU "to work towards granting Ukraine the status of a candidate." The current resolution also mentions the "European aspirations of Moldova and Georgia."

These countries filed their applications after Ukraine after the start of a full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation. There is no recommendation to grant them candidate status in the current resolution.
