The ancient Greek elite wore rings made of meteorite iron
Several centuries before iron smelting became widespread in Greece, members of the local elite were already wearing iron jewellery. But for some of them, the metal probably came literally from the sky. Analysis of dozens of Bronze Age artefacts has revealed that a number of prestigious rings were made from meteoritic iron. Such jewellery was found in opulent tombs alongside gold, silver and other valuables.
Researchers examined 91 iron artefacts from the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age, found at 33 archaeological sites in Greece. The objects are housed in 19 museums.
These included weapons, tools, jewellery and other metal objects.
Previously, it was difficult to determine the origin of the iron: traditional analytical methods often required sampling, which could damage a rare artefact. Now, scientists have used portable X-ray equipment, enabling them to analyse the chemical composition directly in the museum.
Nickel proved to be the key indicator.
Iron meteorites usually contain significantly more nickel than metal derived from terrestrial iron ore.

Elevated nickel levels were detected in 13 objects.
All of them turned out to be rings.
For most of them, the data are consistent enough with a meteoritic origin: the researchers consider around ten rings to be probably or very likely made from meteoritic iron. Further analysis is required for several more specimens.
This is particularly interesting because no such pattern was found amongst the iron tools and weapons examined.
It appears, therefore, that this rare cosmic metal was used primarily not for practical items, but for jewellery.
Most of the nickel-bearing rings come from rich burials of the Late Bronze Age.
Some were found in the famous tholos tombs and chamber tombs associated with major centres of the Mycenaean world. Other prestigious objects were found nearby.
Moreover, the iron in the jewellery itself was often combined with gold, silver or bronze.
According to researchers, this points to the material’s special status. At a time when ordinary iron was extremely rare, meteorite metal may have been regarded almost as a precious metal and served as a sign of high status.
In other words, for people of the Bronze Age, iron may have been valued no less than gold — especially if it literally fell from the sky.
There is, however, one unusual exception.
One of the nickel-containing rings did not come from a rich tomb, but from the Minoan complex of Anemospilia on Crete.
The ornament was found on the finger of a man whom the archaeologists conducting the excavations interpreted as a person of high religious status.
This also supports the suggestion that objects made from meteoritic iron may have been associated with prestige, power or the owner’s special status.
However, it is impossible today to determine the exact symbolic meaning of such rings.
Where did the ancient Greeks obtain their meteorites?
The authors suggest that some of the meteorite iron may have reached the Aegean region from Egypt.
The reason is quite practical.
In Greece’s climate, iron left on the surface corrodes rapidly, so it is relatively difficult to detect meteorites there after a long period of time. In the dry, desert regions of Egypt, the conditions for their preservation are considerably better.
Moreover, there were trade links between Egypt and the Minoan-Mycenaean world.
However, there is no direct evidence that the metal in the rings studied originated specifically from Egyptian meteorites. Therefore, the Egyptian origin of the raw material remains a hypothesis for the time being.
Almost all the rings containing what is likely meteoritic iron date from the Late Bronze Age.
Thereafter, such jewellery disappears from the archaeological record – roughly during the period of crisis and collapse of the Mycenaean palace system at the turn of the Bronze and Iron Ages.
At the same time, a completely different metal began to spread – iron, obtained not from meteorites but by smelting terrestrial ore.
Research has confirmed that the first reliable examples of smelted iron in Greece date back as early as the 14th–13th centuries BCE. At that time, they remained a rarity, but following the fall of the palaces, around the 12th–11th centuries BC, the use of this metal became considerably more widespread.
This marks a distinct turning point: initially, iron was a rare material that fell from the sky and was reserved for elite jewellery, but later people learnt to produce it on a large scale themselves.
Why this is important
Meteoric iron is also known from other ancient cultures. One of the most famous examples is the iron dagger from the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun.
But for the Bronze Age in Greece, the extent to which such material was used remained unclear for a long time.
New research shows that meteoritic iron probably occupied a very specific niche here: it was used to make prestigious rings belonging to people of high social standing.
And the disappearance of such jewellery at roughly the same time as the spread of smelted iron shows just how much the value of a material can depend on its rarity.
As long as the metal fell from the sky, it was exceptional. When people learnt to extract iron from ore, its role in society began to change.
