Switzerland admits possibility of sending its military to Ukraine - under certain condition
Switzerland maintains a neutral position militarily, but remains one of Ukraine's partners in reconstruction and long-term support.
Switzerland allows its military to be sent to Ukraine, but only under strict international conditions. We are talking exclusively about a peacekeeping mission with the mandate of the UN Security Council or the OSCE and with the consent of both sides of the war. This was stated by Swiss Ambassador to Ukraine Felix Baumann in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
Switzerland does not participate in any peace enforcement mechanism that does not have a mandate from the UN Security Council or the OSCE, Baumann stressed.
According to him, Bern will not participate in any coercive operations without clear international authorisation. Moreover, the launch of such a mission requires the consent not only of Ukraine but also of Russia.
The final decision on the possible deployment of the Swiss military contingent will be made by the country's government and parliament.
The diplomat stressed that Switzerland was already actively supporting Ukraine through recovery and reconstruction programmes. This assistance is aimed at strengthening the economy, infrastructure and general stability of the state, which directly affects the country's security.
