US explains its position on supplying Ukraine with its Abrams tanks
The Pentagon believes that, for now, the transfer of Abrams simply does not make sense.
Deputy Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said this at a briefing.
According to her, the Pentagon believes that at the moment it "simply does not make sense" to provide Ukraine with American M1 Abrams tanks.
In particular, this is explained by the fact that the Abrams tanks require a lot of fuel and are difficult to maintain, while it takes a long time to train Ukrainian crews.
In addition, the Pentagon spokeswoman noted that the USA was working with its allies to understand what else could be given to Ukraine from weapons. A Ramstein meeting is being held today to this end.
Ukraine is actively appealing for Western tanks, especially German-made Leopard 2 tanks. Since Leopard tanks are manufactured by a German defence concern, German consent is needed to transfer them to countries outside NATO.
