The SBU counterintelligence service has neutralised an agent network of the Russian Armed Forces' main directorate of the General Staff (known as GRU), which operated in Kharkiv and Zhytomyr regions. This is reported by the SBU.

As a result of a special operation detained three agents of the Russian military intelligence, including a citizen of the Russian Federation. On the instructions of the occupants their henchmen collected information about the locations of deployment and movement of the Defence Forces on the territory of both regions, - stated in the message.

The agents passed the information to the resident, who was in Belgorod. He turned out to be an unofficial freelance representative of the 74th intelligence centre of the Russian GRU. He forwarded the received data to his handler - a staff member of the Russian military intelligence.

SBU counter-intelligence officers identified the locations of the Russian agents and detained them in their own flats. The detainees ˗ local residents who had been recruited by Russian military intelligence before the Russian Federation launched a full-scale invasion.

After 24 February 2022, Russian intelligence "activated" its agents and switched to regular communication sessions with them via messenger.

SBU investigators informed the detainees of suspicion under three articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The detainees are in custody. They face life imprisonment.
