Russian Federation strikes on Okhmatdet: during the shelling the hospital was undergoing operations

On the morning of 8 July, the Russian army massively shelled Ukraine, in particular, Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih and Pokrovsk were under attack.

In particular, the country's main children's hospital, Okhmatdet, came under enemy fire. Rescue operations are now under way in Kyiv at the medical facility, where children with serious illnesses are treated. Socialportal visited the scene of the tragedy and spoke to eyewitnesses of the Russian attack.

An Okhmatdet employee from the Centre for Orphan Diseases said that their patients and staff managed to go down to the shelter, so there were no casualties in this outpatient department. But the centre's new building, which was opened only on March 5, was destroyed.

This is the department where children with severe, rare genetic diseases are treated. When there was a blow, surgeries were held, children were in intensive care under anaesthesia," said the medic.

According to her, during the surgical intervention doctors covered with their bodies a child who was on the operating table. The surgeons were injured, but everyone was saved. The child was redirected to another clinic.

An Okhmatdet employee added that they will go to work tomorrow and continue the elimination of shelling. Sponsors will also come to assess the damage and the terms of restoration. After all, it is impossible to assess the extent of destruction now.

Now all the children who were in Okhmatdet have been transferred to other hospitals in Kyiv and other cities. This was reported by Health Minister Oleh Lyashko.

According to him, children from the cardiac centre were taken to other institutions of the relevant profile, heavy children from the intensive care unit were taken to private clinics. There are now several hundred civilians on the site, who are helping to eliminate the consequences. Lyashko urges volunteers to coordinate actions according to messages in social networks Okhmatdet and the Ministry of Health.

The strike on the Okhmatdet children's hospital killed 2 people and injured 10 others, according to the Interior Ministry. In total, the Kyiv attack killed 20 people and injured 61.
