Presidential elections have begun in Poland
In particular, Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski and Karol Nawrocki, head of the Institute of National Remembrance, are running for the Polish presidency.
Presidential elections have started in Poland, the electoral commission has said. The voting process began at 7:00 local time and will continue until 21:00. Nearly 29 million citizens will be able to participate in the elections.
More than 32 thousand polling stations have opened in the country, and 511 electoral districts abroad are also functioning. According to wPolityce, Poles in the United States have already voted, where 43 thousand voters have registered.
A total of 13 candidates are registered for the election. The main contenders for the Polish presidency are the liberal mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Trzaskowski, nominated by the governing Civic Platform party (incumbent Prime Minister Donald Tusk belongs to it), and Karol Nawrocki, head of the Institute of National Remembrance, nominated by the right-conservative Law and Justice party.
According to the latest polls, Trzaskowski has about 30 per cent of the vote, while Nawrocki has about 25 per cent. Third place in the ratings is held by Slawomir Menzen, a representative of the anti-Ukrainian Confederation party.
If no candidate receives more than 50 per cent of the vote, a second round of elections will be held on 1 June.
According to the current legislation, the current head of state Andrzej Duda is not eligible for re-election as he has been in office for two consecutive terms.
