Poland to send 500 police officers to its border with Belarus
Poland will strengthen security on its border with Belarus.
Poland will send 500 policemen to the border with Belarus to ensure security in the east of the country. The announcement was made on Sunday, 2 July, by the country's Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski, Reuters reported.
The policemen will join the 5,000 border guards and 2,000 soldiers who guard the security of that stretch of the border.
The reason for the beefed-up border security has been an increased number of attempts by the Belarusian side to cross the border with the EU, it has been noted. Only on Saturday, July 1, 187 people tried to cross the border illegally from Belarus.
It should be noted that the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border has been tense since 2021. Then the number of attempts to cross the border from Belarus to Poland illegally has increased dramatically.
Since the beginning of 2023, there have been more than 12 thousand attempts of illegal border crossing from Belarus to Poland.
Also, Poland does not rule out that with the presence of the "Wagnerians" in the territory of Belarus, the number of provocations on the border can increase dramatically.
Earlier, the Baltic states called on NATO to strengthen its presence in the region because of the policy of Lukashenka's regime and the possible deployment of the Wagner Cheka bases on the territory of Belarus.
