Podolyak calls on the UN Security Council to organise a boycott of Russia
The Ukrainian authorities initiated the process of expelling Russia from the UN Security Council back in 2022.
Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the Presidential Office, called on the United Nations (UN) Security Council to "stop joking with Russia and organise a unanimous boycott against it". He mentioned his initiative during a nationwide marathon.
A terrorist country that by its aggression against Ukraine violates fundamental Article 4 of the UN charter cannot be allowed to freely dominate the organisation," Podolyak said.
He also pointed out that the very presence of the Russian Federation in the UN is "a fracture of the global system as such".
According to Podolyak, Russia, which has been in charge of the UN Security Council for a month, should face a total boycott.
This is the only mechanism to put an end to this nonsense," Podolyak stressed.
On 1 April, Russia starts holding the presidency of the UN Security Council.
The UN Security Council is known to consist of 10 rotating and five permanent members, including Russia, Britain, France, the US and China, which have veto power. This month, Russia took over as head of the UN executive body, replacing Mozambique.
Ukraine had earlier initiated a process to expel Russia from the UN Security Council and from the United Nations in general. Kiev provided evidence of how, 31 years ago, the Russian delegation had, in effect, simply occupied the seat of the USSR in the UNSC - a state that at the time had ceased to exist - without any statutory basis for doing so.
