One of the most notorious Russian cybercriminals detained and extradited to the US
This is stated on the NCA website.
Recently, as a result of an international operation coordinated by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA), one of the most notorious Russian-speaking cybercriminals, Russian citizen Maxim Silnikov, was detained and extradited to the United States. He was arrested in Spain and now faces charges of multiple cybercrimes.
Silnikov is suspected of leading a criminal group that developed and distributed malicious software, including ransomware. These programmes demanded ransom from victims around the world by sending messages on behalf of law enforcement agencies. From 2012 to 2014, the group extorted about $400,000 per month.
The criminal group also developed and distributed exploit kits such as Angler. These kits were used for "malvertising" - placing malicious adverts on legitimate websites. They found vulnerabilities in systems, allowing criminals to deliver malware and steal banking data and other sensitive information.
During its most active period, Angler was involved in 40 per cent of all infections, attacking up to 100,000 devices and generating up to $34 million in annual revenue.
The cyber group's activities were also linked to Ukraine. According to investigators, cybercriminals used offices in Kiev under the cover of Media Lab to conduct their operations, including malvertising campaigns. The NCA co-operated closely with the SBU cyber department, which allowed 15 searches of the group's members.
