NATO reacts to Putin's nuclear threats
During his address to the Russian Federal Assembly on 29 February, Putin again threatened the entire civilised world with nuclear weapons.
Putin knows the consequences of using nuclear weapons. This was stated by NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joane in an interview with El Pais.
At the same time, he noted that there is currently no direct threat of Russia using nuclear weapons and noted that Putin's words are psychological intimidation rather than real intent.
We do not see a direct threat of Russia using such weapons. But such statements are very dangerous because they undermine confidence in the nuclear weapons sphere. Russia knows the consequences of such a move," Mircea Joane said.
He also pointed out that "nuclear intimidation" by the Kremlin has been heard periodically for two years now, ever since Russia invaded the territory of a sovereign state - Ukraine.
This is very irresponsible because when you own such weapons, you also have an obligation of restraint. These statements are part of their arsenal of intimidation and psychological pressure," the NATO deputy secretary-general said.
He stressed that NATO would continue to support Ukraine in the confrontation against the Russians' war of conquest.
