German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that Russian assets frozen in the EU should be sent to Ukraine rather than transferred to the USA. He stressed that Kiev needed financial support for several years ahead and Europe should solve this issue on its own.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has spoken out against the transfer of Russian assets frozen in the European Union to the United States. Such a possibility was allegedly discussed during the peace talks promoted by US President Donald Trump.

This is reported by DW.

Merz emphasised that the frozen Russian funds stored in the jurisdiction of the EU should be sent exactly to Ukraine, and not transferred to the United States.

This money should go to Ukraine," the chancellor emphasised.

He said that Kiev needed financial assistance to pass the winter period and support the economy over the next two-three years. That is why, he said, European states should consider this issue exclusively within the EU.

I do not see any economic possibility of transferring these funds to the United States. And the American government knows that," Merz said.

The chancellor added that certain forces in the US are seeking to benefit economically from a potential settlement of Russia's war against Ukraine. He noted that this may be a "legitimate interest", but it does not fulfil European goals and is not the goal of the EU's current efforts to help Ukraine.
