In Germany, Ukrainian refugees will no longer be given cash

There are about 1.65 million Ukrainians registered in Germany.

Germany will limit the issuance of cash to refugees, but will offer to issue a single payment card, on which those in need will receive social payments. This is reported by Tagesschau.

The introduction of a payment card system is designed to prevent migrants from transferring money from social assistance to smugglers or relatives and friends abroad.

In addition, as the publication writes, the new rule will allow local authorities to decide for themselves how much cash cardholders can withdraw within a certain period of time.

Exceptions are allowed, in which social assistance can still be paid in cash, for example, in the case when the card is blocked," the publication points out.

It should be noted that the change in the law does not change the amount of benefits received by asylum seekers.

There are about 1.65 million Ukrainians registered in Germany. As of March, the number of refugees from Ukraine in Germany increased by 250 thousand people. Many are travelling to Germany from other countries. According to the Federal Statistical Office, women make up about 80 per cent of Ukrainian citizens of working age who have sought asylum in Germany since 2022.

Refugees from Ukraine in Germany receive financial assistance for unemployment - 502 euros per month. If a Ukrainian lives with a family, the amount will be slightly less - 451 euros per person. Depending on their age, children receive from 318 to 420 euros.
