According to the scholar, Putin's statements about the history of Ukriana are erroneous and dangerous because they carry genocide, fascism and war.

On 11 February, US historian Timothy Snyder wrote an article "Putin's Genocidal Myth" in which he deconstructed Putin's pseudo-historical statements in an interview with Tucker Carlson. The theses of the article on 13 February are cited by the Centre for Counteracting Disinformation of the National Security and Defence Council.

According to Timothy Snyder, Putin 's statements about history are erroneous and dangerous because they promote war, genocide and fascism.

The Centre for Countering Disinformation cites 5 main theses of Timothy Snyder's article:

  1. In justifying the war against Ukraine, Putin falsely identifies the concepts of "Rus'" and "Russia."
  2. The false thesis of "artificial" nations breeds genocide. Putin justifies the massacres with the "non-existence" of Ukraine.
  3. If it were possible to claim territory based on interpretations of the past, the Russian Federation's position would be weak and Moscow should belong to Mongolia.
  4. The population of the Russian Empire, which Putin likes to recall, had no "Russian" national consciousness, and the elite was made up of foreigners.
  5. By claiming that Ukrainians are "Nazis" Putin wants to mislead the world community. Ukraine has fewer problems with the far-right than the Russian Federation.

We shall remind you that American journalist Tucker Carlson interviewed Putin on 8 February, which lasted for two hours. For about half an hour Putin outlined his version of Ukraine's history. He also said that Ukrainians allegedly "feel like Russians" and "what is happening in Ukraine is an element of civil war".

Ilon Musk mocked Putin's interview with US journalist Tucker Carloson in his social network X.
