G7 says how much Russia should compensate Ukraine for the invasion
The Russians attacked Ukraine over two years ago, decimating the country's population, destroying cities and infrastructure.
The G7 countries have agreed that Russia should pay Ukraine 486bn dollars for the damage caused by its military aggression against it. This is stated in the Communiqué of the G7 members.
Russia must stop its illegal war of aggression and compensate Ukraine for the damage," it said.
At the same time, as the G7 leaders emphasised, Moscow has no right to decide whether and when it will pay for the damage caused to Ukraine.
Russia's obligations under international law to compensate for the damage it has caused are clear, and therefore we continue to consider all possible legal ways in which Russia can fulfil these obligations," the G7 representatives said.
They stressed that the G7 members would continue to support Ukraine and provide it with military, humanitarian and budgetary assistance.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government noted that the financial assessment of the losses faced by the Ukrainian economy may change as Russia continues to strike Ukrainian territory. Thus, according to Prime Minister Denys Shmygal, about 10 per cent of Ukraine's housing stock has already been destroyed.
Ukraine expects that the confiscation of frozen Russian assets will be the main resource for recovery. At the same time, the state co-operates with international partners and creates conditions for attracting private investments.
