Expert names cities in Ukraine that will have the biggest blackouts in winter

With temperatures below 10-15 degrees Celsius, Ukrainians should prepare for prolonged shutdowns.

In winter, the worst power supply situation will be in Kiev, Odessa and Kharkiv. There may be no light at all in the capital for 16 hours a day. This was stated by the director of the Centre for Energy Research, Oleksandr Kharchenko, in an interview with TSN.

He noted that Ukraine has a unified energy system, and these three cities are "weak points" in it.

Kharkiv in general under direct fire, there any substation and any generating capacity can be broken at any time. Military risks are the highest there. Kiev and Odessa are huge consumption points. Odessa has almost no generation of its own; generating capacities are being installed there now, which will cover the water supply, God willing. It will be very good if they have time to launch something that should cover the water supply and at least half of the heat supply to the city," Kharchenko said.

Kiev, he said, is "deficient" on the issue of electricity.

Kiev lacks 700-900 megawatts of power in winter, which must be brought in from outside. If there is nowhere to get them and Kiev will be cut off from external power supply, Kiev citizens will sit without light for 16 hours a day, and it will be normal," Kharchenko said.

The director of the Energy Research Centre said that if there are no frosts, Russian attacks and hits on energy infrastructure facilities in Ukraine, the blackouts will last 4-8 hours a day.

If we are unlucky, if the air temperature is below 10-15 degrees Celsius, we should prepare for 12-16 hours of blackouts," he added.
