Alaska governor makes statement about 'historic meeting' between Trump and Putin
The meeting is due to take place on 15 August.
Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has issued a statement on the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, which will be held in his state. In a message on X, he called the event "historic" and emphasised that Alaska is fully prepared to host the summit.
I welcome the upcoming meeting between President Donald J. Trump and Russia's leader Putin to be held here in the great state of Alaska. Alaska is the most important strategic location in the world, located at the junction of North America and Asia, with the Arctic to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Just two miles separate Russia from Alaska, and no other place plays such an important role in our national defence, energy security and leadership in the Arctic," the Governor said.
Dunleavy also noted that for centuries, Alaska has been a "bridge between nations" and continues to be a "gateway for diplomacy, trade and security" in a key region of the planet.
It is fitting that this is where discussions of global significance are taking place... The whole world will be watching and Alaska is ready to host this historic meeting," he emphasised.
Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are scheduled to meet in the state of Alaska on Friday, 15 August 2025. The talks were earlier announced by Trump himself, and later this information was confirmed by the Russian President's aide Yuri Ushakov.
At the same time, a senior White House official said in comments to CBS News that plans for the summit remain uncertain. According to him, it is possible that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may take part in the negotiations.
