Air India crash: only one passenger survived

One person survived the crash of an Air India passenger plane, which occurred today, 12 June, in the Indian city of Ahmedabad. This is reported by the Indian media with reference to the local police.

The only survivor was British citizen Vishwashkumar Ramesh. According to the police, he was found at the scene of the tragedy - on seat 11A. The man was later found at a hospital where he is being treated for chest, eye and leg injuries. He is known to have been travelling back to the UK with his brother.

It was initially reported that all 242 people on board had died. However, police are yet to confirm final casualty figures, noting that the death toll could rise - the plane went down in a residential area and the aftermath of the crash is still being refined.

As the media reported earlier, the airliner was on a flight from Ahmedabad to London. Almost immediately after departure, the aircraft crashed into the hostel building of a medical college. After the crash, a heavy fire broke out and thick smoke rose over the neighbourhood.
