A man attacked his ex-girlfriend and shot her father

A gruesome murder took place in a village in the central part of Ukraine: a man beat his former partner and shot her retired father to death.

on 14 May, an intruder with a gun was arguing with an ex and shot an 86-year-old man.

What happened?

According to the press service of the Cherkasy region police, about 14:00 hours, the special line 102 received a call that in the village of Bolshaya Sevastyanovka in Umanshchina a murder occurred.

During the clarification of the circumstances of the incident, law enforcers established that the 69-year-old perpetrator had a long-standing conflict with his former partner-in-law. That day, taking firearms, the man went to the house where the woman's parents lived. The 61-year-old woman was also there at the time. During an argument, a fight ensued and the offender grabbed the gun and hit the former father in the head. The pensioner died at the scene. The injured woman was admitted to a local hospital with injuries," the report said.

What is happening now

Investigators seized the weapon, shell casings and other physical evidence and sent it for examination;

  • The attacker was detained by law enforcers in a procedural order in accordance with Article 208 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of Ukraine;
  • The actions of the man were qualified by investigators under Part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (premeditated murder)
    The perpetrator was declared a suspect;

The court chose a preventive measure in the form of detention for a period of 60 days;
For the committed, the man faces imprisonment from seven to fifteen years.

Could the tragedy have been avoided?

Whereas domestic violence used to be considered spousal abuse, the Domestic Violence Prevention and Countermeasures Act, has now significantly expanded the range of people involved.

It also includes the former spouse, common-law marriages (common residence without registration). And also: adoptive parents, persons living or cohabiting in the same family, siblings, guardians and other relatives. uncles, aunts, nieces, cousins, great-uncles, grandparents, - noted Olga Dunebabina, press secretary of La Strada - Ukraine.

It is important not to stand aside if you see facts of domestic violence. More and more people do not consider such cases as other people's family problems and try to help the victims. According to the National Police, in 2022, 71% of appeals about domestic violence came from people who became aware of the possible offences.
