A doctor from Siberia arrived in Mariupol, the city is preparing for cholera

The city of Mariupol, which is left without drinking water and electricity, is threatened with an outbreak of cholera. And although the occupiers do not talk about it out loud, they began to prepare the infectious diseases department on the basis of the emergency hospital for work. This was announced by the adviser to the mayor of Mariupol Petr Andryushchenko.

According to him, almost four boxes have already been prepared to isolate patients. He also clarified that the anti-coronavirus department worked on these beds, and after the Russian army captured the city, the occupiers kept corpses there, about 600 bodies in total.

The infectious department is headed by a Russian who came from Siberia. he is on a "medical safari" for a unique experience. Such an embodiment of Bulgakov's Notes of a Young Doctor on the bones of Mariupol residents, Andryushchenko said.

He added that in the city the queue for obtaining permission to bury the dead is up to ten days. During this time, Mariupol residents must keep the body at home or on the street of impromptu morgues. That is why the number of self-made graves in the yards is growing.

The exhumation has been de facto stopped, Andryushchenko stressed.

As the mayor of Mariupol Vadim Boychenko said in an interview with the BBC, they are not allowed out of the city and are not allowed into it. According to the mayor, there may now be dozens of cholera patients in Mariupol, and their number will grow rapidly.

This infection spreads very quickly. And there are no conditions to keep it. There are no doctors, no infectious diseases hospitals. Our infectious diseases hospital was destroyed along with all the equipment, the doctors were killed,” the mayor noted.

Boychenko believes that there are all signs that allow us to assert that the outbreak of cholera in Mariupol has begun.

In particular, there are many dead in the city, whose bodies are not removed and they lie right on the streets; many natural burials, heat, showers. Added to this is a non-functioning water supply system and, most importantly, a non-functioning sewerage system. And all this forms such a mixture that moves towards rivers, wells, from where people take water, - Boychenko said.

He also noted that people can stand in queues for water for several days.

According to him, measures are now being taken to prevent the infection from spreading further to other regions of Ukraine.

Those people who will travel from Mariupol towards the controlled territories will be tested for cholera. We received tests from international partners,” he said.

Cholera is an acute infectious disease caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water. If left untreated, the disease can be fatal in just a few hours.
