US and EU make statements on anniversary of Russia's invasion of Georgia

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Russia attacked Georgia 14 years ago. The official assured that the United States continues to firmly support the people of Georgia in their quest to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity and find a peaceful solution to the conflict.

Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine highlights the need for the peoples of Georgia and Ukraine to stand in solidarity. The people of Georgia are well aware of Russia's aggressive actions, including disinformation and mass displacement, which have led to poverty and destruction, Blinken said.

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell also made a statement. On his Twitter, he stated that 14 years after the Russian-Georgian war in August 2008, the EU condemns the continued illegal military presence of Russia in Georgia, in particular on the lands of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The EU supports Georgia, its independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and supports the resolution of the conflict,
Borrell assured.
