Historical claims against Ukraine sour attitudes to Poland — 63.1% say so

Recurring historical claims against Ukraine are having an increasingly visible effect on how respondents view Poland. In August 2026, 63.1% of participants in the Active Group study said such disputes worsen their attitude to their neighbour.

The details

30.7% of respondents said historical claims worsen their attitude to Poland slightly, and 32.4% said they worsen it substantially. Together that is 63.1%.

For 27.3%, such claims change nothing. An improvement was reported by 3.7%: 1.9% slight and 1.8% substantial. Another 5.8% were undecided.

The published shares total 99.9% because of rounding to one decimal place.

The two-month trend is marked: in June 2026, 45% reported a worsening; in August it was 63.1% — 18.1 percentage points more. At the same time the share whose attitude was unchanged fell from 43.4% to 27.3%.

Why it matters

The key limit on interpretation is that the question does not measure Ukrainians' overall attitude to Poland. It asks how that attitude is affected by one specific factor — the recurrence of historical claims.

The statement "63.1% of Ukrainians have a poor opinion of Poland" would therefore be wrong. The accurate formulation is: 63.1% of respondents say historical claims worsen their attitude to Poland.

The survey was carried out by Active Group using the SunFlower Sociology online panel. Method — self-completed questionnaires by citizens of Ukraine aged 18 and over. Sample — 1,000 questionnaires, representative by age, sex and region of Ukraine. Data collected on 29 August 2026. The stated theoretical margin of error at a confidence level of 0.95 is no more than 3.1%.
