The main aim of the US is to protect Ukraine's sovereignty.
The M1 Abrams is a modern tank with one of the most advanced (and sophisticated) fire control systems, which includes laser rangefinders, night vision and an on-board computer to help select and aim at targets. One of the features of the Abrams is that it uses a turbine as its engine. And it does consume a lot of fuel.
US President Joe Biden has said:
This is exactly what we want: to help Ukraine defend itself and protect Ukrainian soil. This is not a threat to attack Russia. There is no such threat. If the troops go back to Russia, this war could end today.
Biden also talked about why the US changed its mind about providing tanks to Ukraine:
Germany didn't make me change my mind. I wanted to ensure our unity, and that's what we're doing now.
Biden also stated:
- The US expects Russian offensive operations to intensify in the coming weeks;
- The US wants a settlement in Ukraine on fair and lasting terms;
- The US will support Ukraine for as long as necessary - it's not a fight against Russia, it's a fight for freedom.
Also today, senior US officials gave a briefing during which they said that the United States will purchase eight ADA repair vehicles for Abrams tanks to make sure Ukrainian forces can service the equipment they receive.
Also today, Slovak Defence Minister Jaroslav Nagy said that Slovakia is ready to discuss the transfer of its MiG-29s to Ukraine
